“Hamgami´ Statement on the occasion of December 10, International Human Rights Day
Human rights and peace are inseparable!
December 10 of this year, the 75th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), is being celebrated in a situation that the current wars in Ukraine and Gaza have taken away the basic human rights including the right to live in peace. More than a year has passed since Russia invaded Ukraine, which has already caused massive human casualties on both sides and forcing about six millions Ukrainian people to abandon their homes seeking safety without any prospect of the peace in sight. Moreover, after Hamas´s terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 and consequently blind and devastating retaliation reactions of the Benjamin Netanyahu´s government, the Middle East and the world´s public sentiment has been severely affected as they are worried about its consequences in the region, which is nothing but killing, destruction and further instabilities in the Middle East specially in Palestine and Israel. Under the shadow of this situation, the authoritarian government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has intensified further suppress and execution of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement´s activists. Also, the speculations have increased that the country will be dragged into another war as the Islamic Republic continues supporting the so-called axis of resistance in the region.
This anniversary is special for Iranians in many ways as the human rights and culture of peace are inseparable. For that, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, with the ever-lasting slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom”, awarded this year’s Peace Prize to the jailed Ms. Narges Mohammadi, the human rights activist in Iran. On this day, the Nobel Peace Prize award is supposed to be celebrated despite she still is in prison and cannot attend the ceremony. On the other hand, the Islamic Republic killed hundreds of activists of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement by shooting them in the streets for crying out for their freedom and civil rights last year. Thousand people have been imprisoned and continue executing a number of prisoners by torture and forced confessions.
“Hamgami”, which is a republican political coalition that consists of five parties and political organizations of the opposition of the Islamic Republic of Iran, warns the Islamic Republic authorities to refrain from spreading proxy war through Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi Shiite militias within the framework of militant political and identity goals and stop the gradual opening of the conflict with Israel in Lebanon and Syria through the forces of the “Resistance Front” under the Justification of establishing deterrence. The policy of creating and fueling proxy wars has not only imposed heavy unnecessary costs for the Iranians and had negative consequences for Iran’s economy and national interests, but also intensified the instability in the region. Hamgami calls on all the political powers and the people of Iran to support peace in the region and the world, and condemn the warlike policies of the ruling government of Iran and the Iranian far-right opposition parties as well as the militia forces in the region and the extreme Israeli government. Hamgami considers a comprehensive peace agreement as a necessity and keep its effort to seek peace and provide human rights as an important task.
“Hamgami” demands the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to the torture and execution of protesters and dissidents. We also believe that human rights activist Narges Mohammadi must be released from the prison immediately to attend the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony at 10 December and receive her award in person. “Hamgami” hopes that all the nationalist, democratic and republican parties and organizations cooperate with each other to find a way to get out of the current social, political and economic crises of the country and achieve peace in the world especially in the middle east.
